actions based upon the conduct of any individuals, groups
or associations purporting to perform any acts in the
name of the Sorority or purported to be in any way connected
with initiation into membership in the Sorority.
C.
A woman otherwise qualified for membership will
not be denied membership into the Sorority solely by
reason of being related to a member of the Sorority.
D.
Penalties:
1.
Any chapter violating any of the above delineated
paragraphs will be penalized by:
a.
Denial of Membership Intake by the Regional Director
with approval of the National President and the National
Executive Board, or by the National President with approval
of the National Executive Board; or
b.
Suspension by the Regional Director with approval
of the National President and the National Executive
Board, or by the National President with approval of
the National Executive Board.
2.
Suspensions and/or denials of Membership Intake
will be reported to the National Executive Board and
the Grand Chapter.
3.
POLICIES REGARDING HAZING, ALCOHOL AND DRUG ABUSE
Each violation is subject to fines, as detailed in the
Code of Conduct, per member, in addition to personal
suspension with concurrence of the National President
and the Regional Director.
4.
If an applicant for membership in the Sorority
allows herself to be the subject of such abuses or participates
in any such activity “before, during and/or after
the membership intake process”, including the observation
of same, and/or fails to report such abuses to appropriate
Sorority officials (Chapter Officers, Regional Officers,
National Officers, or National Headquarters), she may
be barred from admission to membership in Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority, Inc.
"It is not sufficient to declare that Delta Sigma
Theta Sorority is opposed to any acts of harassment
or violence during the Membership Intake Program or
in the conduct of sorority business. Delta Sigma Theta
Sorority, Inc. must assume an affirmative action program
that integrates the basic tenets of the individual value
and the worth of each member into every facet of sorority
life." (Chapter Management Handbook, Section 800,
Citizenship, Morality and Values)
Delta's Policy Re: Alcohol and Drug Abuse (Chapter
Management Handbook, Section 800, Citizenship, Morality
and Values)
"Alcohol and drug abuse have been proven to be
physically and psychologically damaging to the individual.
Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. has promoted projects
and programs to educate the public to the dangers of
excessive usage and has supported programs designed
to rehabilitate persons addicted to their use.
Alcohol and drug use in conjunction with membership
and other procedures in Delta Sigma Theta will not be
tolerated. Chapters are encouraged to continue to educate
themselves on the consequences of alcohol and drug abuse
and to establish a moral climate in the Sorority that
would discourage misuse."
NOTE: The problem is so serious that many cities and states
(and consequently, colleges and universities, are issuing
brochures, etc.) have enacted laws regarding possession
and consumption of alcohol and beverages, changes in drinking
age, etc. for the general populace that also have a direct
influence on fraternities and sororities; and the type
of social activities approved by the college/university
officials are constantly reassessed.
Individuals and/or chapters that violate the aforestated
policy will be subject to disciplinary action, as defined
in the Grand Chapter Constitution and Bylaws, 2008 edition,
ARTICLE XII - DISCIPLINE, and the organization's Code
of Conduct, as amended March 2008.
