53rd National Convention C O V E R A G E Praise is What We Do JOURNAL Winter 2017 s43 It was Sunday night, Aug. 6, 2017. The setting was Las Vegas and the MGM Grand Garden Arena during the 53rd National Convention of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. Delegates attended the Interfaith Service earlier that morning, but that did not stop gospel recording artists Tasha Cobbs and Hezekiah Walker from taking them to church that evening. “Somebody say the name of Jesus,” cried out Cobbs. “Has anybody got a testimony in here?” All of this as she belted out songs like “Forever At Your Feet,” and “Fill Me Up/ Overflow.” “They tell me I scream too much,” said Cobbs. “But, I got a revelation. When I start shouting, things start shifting.” There was a definite shift when she broke out with crowd favorite, BY VIVIAN KING “Break Every Chain.” With fists pounding in the air and singing along, members received every note, every word and every bit of the power in the name of Jesus that Cobbs referred to during the finale of her performance. Hezekiah Walker continued the rousing concert, exclaiming “When you get home and somebody says, ‘how was the concert with Tasha Cobbs and Hez,’ don’t say anything, just do…” as he broke out in a happy dance. The “souled out” crowd loved it, clapping, singing and raising hands in praise to such songs as “Every Praise,” “I Need You to Survive,” “Grateful” and “Faithful is our God.” The Chicago Alumnae Chapter’s gospel choir opened the concert and got the chance to show that praise is what they do, as winners of the ”Sing, Soror! Sing! Competition.” “Kim LeMay Woodfork-Moore and Melanie Martin Ware lead the choir with nothing but praise, always asking to give so that others receive,” said Deborah Douglas, Chicago Alumnae chapter president. “We are just full from the Lord’s blessings, just full of praise.” s Sing Soror Sing winners of the Chicago Alumnae Chapter join Hezekiah Walker on stage to culminate the Gospel Concert singing his hit song “Every Praise”.
