It included footage of the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History & Culture in Washington, D.C. to which Delta gave $400,000 through fundraising efforts. Dr. Walker said, “We don’t toot our own horn. We do what we do to support others. We expect nothing in return.” The program opened with the Presentation of Colors by the all Delta Color Guard, comprised of retired and active duty members of the United States Army. The evening continued with greetings from Soror Beverly Evans Smith, National First Vice President, and a video greeting from convention corporate sponsor representative Sandra Phillips Rogers, group vice president, general counsel and chief legal officer, Toyota Motor North America. New to this year’s Public Meeting was the presentation s40 DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. of the Delta awards that are customarily given at the Delta Extravaganza. Along with those traditionally awarded at the Public Meeting, were the Keeper of the Flame Award, Emerging Artist Award and the Lillian Award. The National President’s Award for Excellence was bestowed upon Katherine Johnson, a pioneer in mathematics and one of the first African-American women to work with NASA space missions. Her story was featured in the movie “Hidden Figures.” Her daughter Joylette Hylick accepted the award on her behalf. All the awardees thanked the members of the Sorority for their philanthropic efforts during their acceptance speeches. Tuskegee University received the Distinguished Endowed Chair award in the amount of $200,000. This year marks the 40th anniversary of the award, which Tuskegee was the first recipient in 1977. The program ended with the traditional presentation of gifts to the National Pan-Hellenic Council of Presidents and greetings and gifts from the National Pan-Hellenic Council Organizations. s Debra Lee, chairman and CEO of BET Networks, (CENTER) receives the Impact Award during the Public Meeting Aug. 6, 2017.
