PHOTO BY SHARON FARMER JOURNAL Winter 2017 s21 The East Point College Park Alumnae Chapter step team won first place in the 53rd National Convention Step Show by taking attendees on a journey though Egypt with a Dora the Explorer-like character serving as the tour guide. The team’s Egyptian goddess costumes, precision performance, acrobatics, and the voice of Minerva telling sorors to “slay on” sent excitement throughout the crowd. Crystal Davis, member of Youngstown Alumnae Chapter, liked EPCPA’s performance the best “because of the precision and the heart they put into their performance.” The winning team’s step master, Cherese Clark Wilson, said, “We wanted to come to Vegas and bring the glitz and glamor and wow the audience.” Clark also expressed the team’s gratitude for their chapter’s support and the team’s dedication to practicing 1-2 times each week for six months. The step show, held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, kicked off with National Second Vice President Taylor McCain’s exuberance hyping the crowd and acknowledging sponsors, including AFLAC. “This was a great opportunity to sponsor wonderful women who make a difference in the world,” said Zachary Johnson, AFLAC recruiting consultant. McCain brought the Sorority’s Executive Board on stage to demonstrate their cool dance moves and she acknowledged the Regional Representatives, who performed prior to the step teams. The Charlotte Alumnae Chapter step team won second place with a fun Delta Olympics theme, which included gymnastics and an on-stage basketball game.
