53rd National Convention C O V E R A G E “A Dazzling Delta Tribute” Host chapters welcomed sorors to Las Vegas with “A Dazzling Delta Tribute,” a cabaret style extravaganza full of music, fashion and dance. Showgirls in sparkling costumes posed for pictures with convention delegates as they filed into the hall for the welcome event on Friday night. A video tribute to the Past National Presidents literally set the stage for the show to come. There was music from every era led by talented soloists and dancers representing all styles, including jazz, contemporary and even majorette and hip hop. “I like how they went through the different eras of music for each national president,” said Sheila Lockhart, a member of the Baltimore Metropolitan Alumnae Chapter. “It was like seeing a real Vegas review.” The tunes ranged from James Brown’s “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag” to “Run the World (Girls)” by Beyoncé. There was even a Delta-style fashion show set to the tune of Patti Labelle’s “New Attitude.” Kody Volkman, a member of Tempe Alumnae Chapter initiated in spring 2017, said her favorite part of the welcome event was meeting new sorors and getting a chance to cut loose before the work of convention began. “It’s indescribable,” she said. “It’s like the most family environment I’ve ever been in. It’s amazing.” s16 DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. Members exited the event by taking part in what may very well have been the world’s longest stroll line down the red carpet. Prior to the start of convention, host chapter members made available to members a Youtube video of the convention stroll. It was clear that many delegates prepared prior to arrival. When “Uptown Funk” began to play, all Deltas in the hall became a part of the show. s Merald “Bubba” Knight performs at the Welcome Event during the 53rd National Convention in Las Vegas Aug. 4, 2017.
