DJ: How do you think your previous experience and/or involvement in Delta has prepared you for the position you now hold? JM: When people ask me where I am from I usually do not know how to answer because I have lived in seven different states across the country. This has given me experiences with a variety of people that I will use in working with our seven regions. I have been a part of different Delta programs such as Leadership DELTA and writing for the “Delta Anthology.” I have also formed bonds with sorors while seeing the work of Delta across different sectors. As chapter president of a city-wide chapter consisting of three campuses in a two-hour radius, I have also learned how to do the work of Delta under unique circumstances. DJ: What’s your favorite Delta Song and why? JM: My favorite Delta song is the “Pyramid Hymn.” When I hear the “Pyramid Hymn” it takes me back to the time before I was a Delta, and I reflect on how far I have come and the work that I have done thus far. It also encourages me to continue working hard for Delta. Elsie Cooke-Holmes National Secretary Chapter Affiliation: Dallas Alumnae Chapter Region: Southwest DJ: Describe your position’s role within the committee. ECH: My role is primarily that of recording officer making sure our records are complete and disseminated to the appropriate officers and members including our national convention proceedings, National Executive Board and Executive Committee minutes and other records as outlined in our Constitution and Bylaws. My role supports the vision of the National President; and works with the Executive Committee and Executive Board to provide leadership and strategic direction, supporting in whatever capacity is needed. I also view my role as one that collaborates with -- and serves as a resource for -- regional and chapter secretaries and partners with other Executive Board entities to effectively communicate with our membership. DJ: What led you to pursue a leadership position in Delta? ECH: Shortly after my initiation into the Epsilon Kappa Chapter, I attended my first regional conference in the Southern Region. I attended every plenary session, as s10 DELTA SIGMA THETA SORORITY, INC. many workshops as possible and every optional activity. I was fascinated by the work of Delta beyond the chapter level. Since that time, I have sought to serve our sisterhood in a number of capacities at all levels of the Sorority, and I felt that my Delta, professional and civic background would enable me to serve effectively as National Secretary and a member of the National Executive Committee. DJ: How do you think your previous experience and/or involvement in Delta has prepared you for the position you now hold? ECH: I have been a continuously active member since I was initiated. I have been fortunate to serve Delta in many capacities on the local, regional and national levels including: chapter secretary, chapter president, national committee co-chair of several committees and Regional Director. These experiences have provided me with the background, valuable professional and leadership skills, and deep understanding of our organization, chapters and sorors, and have prepared me well to serve as National Secretary and Executive Committee member. DJ: What’s your fondest Delta memory? ECH: My fondest Delta memory is of my initiation day when I was pinned by my mother, the late Soror Anna L. Cooke. I was able to realize a life-long dream of becoming a member of our great sisterhood, and there have been many awesome memories since that time. Deborah Jones- Buggs National Treasurer Chapter Affiliation: Chicago Alumnae Region: Midwest DJ: Describe your position’s role within the committee. DJB: As the chief financial officer of the Sorority, my role is to assist the National Executive Committee in developing, executing and communicating the fiscal strategy of Delta. I can think of no better way to honor my commitment to Delta than using my love for accounting and finance to not only serve Delta but to also benefit others. Elsie Cooke-Holmes Deborah Jones-Buggs
