JOURNAL Winter 2017 s9 Cheryl Hickmon National First Vice President Chapter Affiliation: Hartford Alumnae Region: Eastern DJ: Describe your position’s role within the committee. the National Scholarship and Standards Committee which allow me to carry out my leadership responsibilities. The membership can be confident that I will be able to enforce policies and procedures, arbitrate disputes, evaluate and reclaim members and deliver effective leadership training. DJ: Which Founder(s) do you identify with most and why? CH: I identify most with Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell because I had an opportunity to meet her on several occasions. One occasion that will always remain in my memory was my first national convention in Detroit, in 1983. Founder Bertha Pitts Campbell was at a reception for convention delegates, and I had an opportunity to meet and converse with her. It was a moment that truly took my breath away! Jaria Martin National Second Vice President Chapter Affiliation: Beta Psi Region: Farwest DJ: Describe your position’s role within the committee. JM: As National Second Vice President, it is my role to be the collegiate advocate and to strengthen the relationship between collegiate and alumnae chapters. I also encourage collegiate engagement within the Sorority. I also serve on the Scholarship and Standards Committee and work with the regional representatives to serve the collegiate members of Grand Chapter. DJ: What led you to pursue a leadership position in Delta? JM: We need more collegiate members running for both national and regional positions. It should be competitive as we seek to pursue our lifetime commitment and serve our organization. I have been in a leadership position since I joined Delta, first as chapter president and now National Second Vice President. I am young and just over a year in Delta, and I’m also from a smaller region and a city-wide chapter. I hope that I am an inspiration to collegiate sorors to run for office. If I can do it, so can they. CH: The role of the National First Vice President, who Cheryl A. Hickmon also serves as the chair of the National Scholarship and Standards Committee, is to ensure the longevity of the Sorority, as well as safeguard it from harm. This is accomplished by conducting oversight of the Constitution and Bylaws and the established policies and procedures among all members and chapters of the Grand Chapter in order to protect our legacy of sisterhood, scholarship and service. DJ: What led you to pursue a leadership position in Delta? CH: Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., has always been a leader on the national stage, and it has always been my desire since my initiation in 1982 into the Alpha Xi Chapter at South Carolina State University to have a seat at the proverbial leadership table of the Sorority. By stepping up to the plate and being a leader I have had the opportunity to share my voice and give perspective to the prioritization of the mission, vision, goals and strategies of Delta. I took to heart the words of our 17th National President Soror Mona Humphries Bailey during her Founders Day speech in 1983 when she stated: “If not us who? And if not now, when?” DJ: How do you think your previous experience and/ or involvement in Delta prepared you for the position you now hold? CH: I believe that true leaders’ actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more. My 35 years of continuous leadership experience at the national, regional and chapter levels of sorority governance in the roles of Regional Representative, Regional Director, National Secretary, co-chair of the National Leadership Academy, and co-chair of the National Documents Review and Revision Task Force have enforced my vast experi-ence and demonstrated commitment to the Sorority. These previous experiences have prepared me, as well as supported and validated my leadership ability, to serve in the position of National First Vice President and chair of Jaria Martin
